Definition of Washington State Apprenticeship
In Washington State, an apprenticeship is a formal, structured program that combines onthe-job training with academic classes, generally offered through a community or technical college that are referred to as “related supplemental instruction.” These programs are designed to prepare individuals for careers in various trades and professions by providing them with paid hands-on experience and specific trade knowledge. Apprenticeships are overseen by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) and must meet certain standards to ensure they provide high-quality training and partner with accredited institutions such as South Seattle College. Apprentices earn college credits while completing the program. If they choose to do so,
they can later apply these credits towards a 2-year or 4-year degree.
Potential apprentices usually must enter apprenticeship through a competitive hiring process with the company, joint apprenticeship training committee (JATC), or other organization where they will be employed as an apprentice. They earn wages that increase progressively as they gain more experience and skills. Upon completion, apprentices receive a nationally recognized credential, certifying their expertise in their chosen field, and often secure skilled employment. Apprenticeships must meet specific standards and are overseen by regulatory bodies, such as the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.
Definition of Pre-Apprenticeship
Pre-apprenticeship programs are designed to prepare individuals for entry into apprenticeship programs by providing foundational skills, basic education, and exposure to specific trades. These programs are typically shorter, ranging from a few weeks to several months, and focus on job readiness and essential skills. Pre-apprentices at Georgetown earn college credits for completing their program and have access to other resources available to students such as discounted transportation passes and emergency funding assistance. Participants in pre-apprenticeship programs may or may not receive compensation (generally in the form of a daily stipend), depending on the program. Completion of a preapprenticeship helps individuals to meet the entry requirements of apprenticeship programs and increases their chances of success once they begin their formal training.
