Pre-Apprenticeship Programs

Georgetown partners with joint employer and labor groups (JATCs), individual employers, nonprofit, and community-based organizations to offer pre-apprenticeship programs to people in the community. Pre-Apprenticeship programs are bridge programs to apprenticeships and other jobs in the construction trades, manufacturing industry and more.

Pre-Apprenticeship programs are designed to prepare individuals for entry into apprenticeship programs by providing foundational skills, math instruction, technical skills training, job readiness instruction, safety training and certifications, and exposure to specific trades.

Pre-apprentices at Georgetown earn college credits for completing their program and have access to other resources available to students including discounted transportation passes and emergency funding assistance.

Pre-Apprenticeship programs typically run from several weeks to a few months, 3-5 days per week. Participants in pre-apprenticeship programs may or may not receive compensation (generally in the form of a daily stipend), depending on the program.

In many cases, students in pre-apprenticeship programs can have their tuition entirely covered by workforce funding or grants from a variety of sources.

Completion of a pre-apprenticeship program helps individuals to meet the entry requirements of apprenticeship programs and increases their chances of success once they begin their formal training. In most cases, pre-apprenticeship program sponsors work with local employers to create opportunities for pre-apprenticeship graduates to find employment and apprenticeship programs in their chosen field.

Who is eligible and how do I apply?

Every pre-apprenticeship program has their own specific eligibility requirements, however there are some basic guidelines.

  • Most pre-apprenticeship programs are open to anyone 18 years or older, sometimes younger, depending on the occupation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the occupation
  • Ability to attend class 3-5 days per week, 6-8 hours per day for 10-12 weeks (about 3 months), usually starting in the early morning.
