Washington Safety and  Health Training Institute

The Safety Training Center is a broad-based coalition of labor, business and public entities that are establishing a state-of-the-art Safety Training Center. The Center is housed at the Georgetown Campus of South Seattle Community College, which is located in the heart of the economic hub of Western Washington. The location is ideal for addressing the safety needs of construction, transportation and manufacturing because the primary apprenticeship programs for these trades are located at or near the Georgetown site. There is a high concentration of businesses in the area and a supportive institutional structure for building the center.

All Coalition members and partners will benefit by pooling their resources into this centrally located facility. Together, the Coalition will have the latest equipment and "real life", hands-on training, share the best curriculum and develop a pool of instructors to meet the needs of industry, both long-term and short-term.

Classes will include OSHA series, Haz-Mat, Lock Out-Tag Out, Hearing Conservation, Confined Space, Community 911 Emergency/Disaster Preparedness and other classes relevant to the industries.

The Coalition is open to interested parties who would like to participate in developing and using the Safety Training Center.

Information

The Washington Safety and Health Training Institute has been awarded the CPWR Small Study One-Year Grant. Chuck Bailey has been hired to begin this implementation. Meetings are being scheduled with interested JATC's and employers to determine what specifically will be recommended. The WASHTI Advisory Board has approved the first brochures on how safety makes a difference. These were compiled by studying statistics from Labor and Industry injury reports.
